What inspired you to become Oculoplastic surgeon?

Maryam- "Interestingly, I did not even think about ophthalmology until my last year of medical school. I was friendly with a few of the students a year above me. I always enjoyed the more delicate facial procedures and was thinking of applying to ENT or General Surgery with the idea that I would do facial plastics. I had one friend going into ophthalmology and he recommended I try it as an elective".
'Once I finished my first elective, it was decided. I loved the idea of being a specialist and being an expert in one area. My parents always drilled the importance of excelling, to be the master of one trade instead a jack of all trades. I felt that Ophthalmology and further sub specialization into Oculoplastics would harness that. I truly enjoyed my time in residency and fellowship. So much so that I went on to become part time faculty at GW upon completion of my residency".
"Going into non-surgical aesthetics was not something I had exposure to, particularly as my training was focused on the medical rather than the aesthetic. When I moved to London and completed two oculoplastic fellowships, I researched in the use of hyaluronic acid fillers in treating patients with ocular defects. It was this exposure that opened the door to non-surgical treatments. While I took some time out for the birth of my first son, I then also did some work in dermatology to supplement this knowledge with lasers and other non-surgical modalities".
What's your am / pm routine
Maryam: "In the morning, I wash my face with MZ Skin Cleanse & Clarify while I am in the shower. Afterwards, I use MZ Skin Brighten & Perfect 10% vitamin c serum to combat oxidative damage and promote collagen production while decreasing the appearance of pigmentation, a condition I suffer from".
"My last step is MZ Skin Tint & Protect or MZ Skin Hydrate and Nourish to help hydrate and maintain hydration on my skin while also protecting it with SPF. In the evening I take a bit more time to help me relax. Most evenings I am trying new products that are in development but generally, I run a warm bath with Epsom salts, wash my face with Cleanse & Clarify for about 10 minutes".
"I also love an exfoliating mask like my own Radiance & Renewal. If time allows, I’ll leave it on for 10-15 minutes or use my Hydra-Lift Golden Facial mask". "Once out of the bath, I use MZ Skin Replenish & Restore Mask to nourish the skin and plump with stem cells and placenta, a bit of Soothe & Smooth Eye cream and I am done".
How do you start your day?
Maryam: "I am not an early morning person so I organise in the evening so I can have a late wake up at about 7:15. I bath and shower before bed so in the morning, it’s a quick 5 minutes in the bathroom. Every morning I start my day with a hot water infused with ginger and lemon. Then I have freshly squeezed half mandarin and half orange juice (I know it’s a sugar surge, but I love it- it’s my caffeine) with either porridge (with berries, and a bit of honey) or poached eggs with toast. If I am running late, I will have a late breakfast around ten in my office of wheat free bread avocado sprinkled with chilli flakes."
How do you juggle running MZ SKIN & your clinic?
Maryam: "It’s a balancing act but generally I focus the mornings on the clinic and surgery and the afternoons are for MZ Skin".
 How do you unwind?
Maryam: "Exercise is great for de-stressing. I like to see my trainer and I go to the gym to do some cardio, or I indulge in a home spa treatment. MZ Skin Radiance & Renewal is my go-to mask when I want to unwind in the bath".
 What's on your bedside table?
Maryam: "Lip balm, a book and my earrings!"
Best career advice you've ever received?
Maryam:  "I had a mentor when I was a resident and when I was about to embark on my private practice in Washington, DC there were many who told me that I shouldn’t do it, that the area was too saturated. I asked the advice of my mentor who said, “there is always room for one more, so if you want to do, do it.  You will make it happen.”  He was right then and I still think that today. There is always room for everyone to succeed so if you have the passion, just do it.  I have never been competitive with anyone but myself. I love this philosophy and always hope I can help others in their journey like my mentor did for me".
Who is your inspiration?
Maryam: "I feel fortunate to be surrounded by inspiration in so many fabulous and fierce women who are also my friends as well as from entrepreneurs around the world who raise the collective bar higher".
"I am inspired by those that have taken a risk, put all their energy into creating or supporting something that makes a difference.  I love hearing, learning, and seeing their visions come to life, in the midst of craziness. I remember that photo with an iceberg, where everyone sees the top, but they do not realise the journey it has taken to get there. As a young entrepreneur I now see the sacrifices and hard work it takes to make one’s vision a success".
"I love the energy in people who have gone out and taken a risk and said: ‘You know what, I’m going to try this’ and then making it work and then sometimes having it explode is just phenomenal. Inspiration just comes in the strangest of forms and surrounding yourself with people who are amazing just lifts everybody up".
